A Movement Built Around Young Entrepreneurs

Independent Youth Inc. is more than a program — it's a pipeline. Based in St. Louis, IY connects teenagers with mentors, business training, and real-world selling opportunities. The organization has a particular focus on amplifying young women in business, providing an environment where girls and young women can discover entrepreneurship as a viable and empowering path.

When IY approached us to redesign their web presence, the challenge was dual: build something that felt credible to funders and parents, while remaining genuinely exciting to the teenagers at the center of the mission.

Serving Youth, Women & Their Communities

Three pillars define why Independent Youth matters — and guided every design and content decision we made.

Youth Empowerment
Every design element — from the vibrant color palette to the real faces of young entrepreneurs — speaks directly to teenagers. The site had to be cool, credible, and aspirational all at once. Navigation is intuitive, content is visual, and the experience makes a teen feel like entrepreneurship belongs to them.
Women in Business
A core part of IY's DNA is creating space specifically for young women to build businesses and leadership skills. Our design intentionally showcases female entrepreneurs front and center — in photography, in testimonials, and in program descriptions — because representation drives aspiration.
Startup Ecosystem Growth
IY isn't just helping individual teens — it's seeding the next generation of St. Louis entrepreneurs. By connecting participants with local business owners, mentors, and markets, the program strengthens the regional startup ecosystem one young founder at a time.
The Challenge

Building a Brand That Speaks Two Languages

How does a youth entrepreneurship and mentorship program build a recognizable, beautiful brand for the web that speaks to both a teenage audience and the institutional credibility demanded by funders, partners, and schools?

"The site had to be cool and exciting to a 15-year-old, while simultaneously earning the trust of a corporate donor or school administrator."

Answering that question required deep audience mapping. For the teenage visitor, the experience needed energy, visual impact, and the reassurance that people like them had already succeeded. For the adult visitor — parent, teacher, or funder — the site needed structure, data, and a clear articulation of program outcomes.

Our Approach

How We Built It

Six intersecting disciplines — from brand strategy to AI-assisted content — came together to deliver a site IY could grow with.

01
Brand Strategy & Visual Identity
We worked closely with IY leadership to establish a visual language rooted in their existing identity — energetic, community-first, and aspirational. Colors, typography, and photography guidelines were codified to ensure consistency across all touchpoints.
02
Youth-First UX Design
We mapped the teen user journey and designed for that primary audience first — bold visuals, short content blocks, intuitive navigation, fast load times on mobile, and a clear path to program registration and community engagement.
03
Visual Storytelling With Data
To express program impact to institutional audiences, we used infographic-style statistics — youth enrolled, programs delivered, products sold, communities reached. Data became design: every number had a visual home that made the case without heavy prose.
04
AI-Assisted Content Curation
We integrated AI-powered content suggestions that surface the most relevant program offerings and success stories based on visitor behavior. First-time visitors see the broadest overview; returning visitors get surfaced the programs most aligned with their previous interests.
05
Responsive Mobile-First Build
With teenage users as the primary audience, mobile performance was non-negotiable. The site was built mobile-first with progressive enhancement, using lazy-loaded imagery, optimized fonts, and minimal JavaScript overhead to achieve sub-2-second load times on 4G connections.
06
WordPress CMS for Non-Technical Staff
IY staff needed to update program listings, events, and news without developer support. We built a custom WordPress theme with intuitive ACF-powered fields, enabling the team to create rich content without touching code — keeping the site current and alive.

Goal-Driven Design, Showcasing Young Entrepreneurs

The finished product brought together every discipline into a single, cohesive digital experience that IY could be proud of.

Dual-Audience Homepage
A hero section that immediately communicates excitement to teens, followed by a structured program overview that satisfies parents and funders — all within the first viewport.
Entrepreneur Showcase Pages
Dedicated profile pages for IY participants — their stories, their businesses, their products — turning the program's greatest asset (its students) into its most compelling marketing.
Impact Data Visualization
Animated counters and infographic sections translate program statistics — enrollment numbers, businesses launched, revenue generated — into visual proof points that build funder and donor confidence.
AI-Powered Content Discovery
Smart content recommendations surface the most relevant programs and stories to each visitor, increasing time-on-site and program application rates by surfacing personally relevant pathways through the IY experience.

More Than a Website —
A Platform for the Next Generation

Independent Youth's digital presence doesn't just represent the organization — it actively serves it. Young women and men in the program can browse program opportunities, submit applications, and see themselves in the success stories of IY alumni. Community partners and funders can understand the program's depth and reach in moments. The platform works as hard as the people behind IY do.
